Development and SupportMany institutions, both private and public, have focused on supporting the artisanal sector as a main economic and social development strategy for Ayacucho. Their objective is to help these small businesses grow and achieve stability in the marketplace, thus providing new skilled jobs, enhancing the tourism sector, and strengthening the local economy. Problems with the sector abound. Artisans lack organization between themselves and consequently cannot effectively address issues related to technical improvement, production, marketing, and sales. Furthermore, the competition between workshops may drive prices and quality down.
Development projects involving artesania often stage a diverse set of capacitaciones, or training modules, on technical expertise, business management, computer skills, quality control, growth planning, commercial exportation, product design, and other topics. The usefulness of these capacitaciones depends on the maturity and organization of the workshops. The sector-wide goal is to increase handicraft exports and tourism in order to raise incomes and improve businesses. |
